How a Practice Achieved Growth with Sound Optometry Billing

Optometry billing tasks and denied claims will quickly fill up your staff’s time with repetition and disorganization. Their time is much better spent on patient care, which is why you need to take the next step in improving your eye care practice operations.

Denese Jackson of The Eye Contact took this important step. She’s sharing some of her optometry billing insights today to inspire growth and success in your eye care practice tomorrow.

How did you know it was time to bring in Fast Pay Health optometric billing consultants to support your optometry billing process?

We have been practicing optometry since 1991 and The Eye Contact opened a few years later in 1996. During the early days of our practice, the majority of our patients paid in cash and very few had insurance.

The payment process has changed quite a bit over the years. Now, more than 70% of our patients pay with insurance. Because of this evolution in patient payment methods—and with the constant changes in our staff—there was a need for more consistency in how billing was handled. Eventually, we turned to Fast Pay Health for optometry billing support.

What solutions is Fast Pay Health providing to help you be more successful?

Researching and resubmitting denied claims is a time-consuming and frustrating process. This is a key benefit of having optometric billing consultants like the Fast Pay Health team around to provide guidance. Their success is tied to the success of our business, as it relates to tracking and ensuring payment on claims.

Fast Pay Health is diligent on all insurance claim matters. The “Attention Office” integration in our optometry EHR (MaximEyes) lets us know when their billing team needs more information from ours to research a claim to ensure payment. This improved process of communication between our practice and insurance companies has proven very beneficial for our staff.

Can you share some of the proactive steps the Fast Pay Health team takes to reduce insurance aging?

Fast Pay Health ran reports on insurance aging when we first began our partnership. They continue to manage everything, making sure that payments are received and posted in a timely manner.

Due to the growth of our eye care practice and staff changes over the years, payments were often received and not posted or filed appropriately.

Soon after we started working with the Fast Pay Health team, insurance aging reports were cleaned up and research was completed to obtain payments as far back as possible. Good progress continues, keeping our insurance payments aligned and up-to-date.

Now that your optometry billing process is more efficient, what are some priorities you can refocus on?

The focus of our practice is to continue growing and innovating on both the patient care side and the optical side. This growth and innovation would be difficult to achieve without sound optometry billing strategies in place. Now we can focus on what’s next for our practice.

Any tips you want to share with other optometry practices who are challenged with their billing process?

It’s important to review your office strategy to determine what support is needed for continued growth. It’s been an exciting and helpful journey to engage with Fast Pay Health. And I do recommend such a partnership to other optometrists and their staff.
